Knitscene Winter 2012

Guess what I got in my mailbox last week?

Knitscene! Woohoo! I’m always excited to write articles for Knitscene because it means I get the magazine the minute it comes out. I wrote the article about featured designer Leah B. Thibualt, a.k.a. “Ms. Cleaver”, and I’m already in love with the designs in this issue.

I’m particularly fond of Leah’s “Marketa Mitts”, named after actress and musician Marketa Irglova:

I love these not just because they’re super cute and would be a great gift, but because I’m also a huge fan of The Swell Season and the film Once. If you’re not familiar with either of those things, stop what you’re doing and go look them up. Here’s a video of them singing their Oscar-winning song “Falling Slowly”:

I had the good fortune to see Once at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. When the movie started, there were some sound problems, so the director asked for it to stop so he could fix the audio. While we were all waiting, Glen Hansard and Marketa came out to serenade us. It was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen — they played 3 songs from the movie, including Falling Slowly. I was able to grab a blurry photo:

So, when Leah told me the gloves were inspired by the film, I knew they’d be an automatic favorite!

Another design I’m drooling over is the Minnette Pullover, designed by Cassie Castillo:

It’s got really interesting construction and a pretty, intricate lace pattern that I really can’t wait to try:
