New Giganto-Blanket Instructions
Hi everyone!
Quick update here: I have exciting news! I’ve completely updated the Giganto-Blanket pattern to include instructions for prepping non-superwash wool. Now you can avoid stomping the wool in the bathtub altogether if you have a garment steamer — hopefully this is helpful!
If you’ve already purchased the pattern on Etsy or Ravelry, you can go into your accounts to download the new version.

I am considering buying pattern and supplies for my daughter for a Christmas present. I need to know how much yarn is required in order to determine if it is in my price range. I see price is about $5 for 3.53 oz. How much yarn is require, in total? If I establish it is in my price range, I will buy the a few patterns as well.
Hi Grace — The materials cost around $150 total, depending on where you source them from and what size blanket you make. More info can be found on my FAQ: http://nocturnalknits.com/giganto-blanket-faq/

We just purchased the Bronze Superwash from the Sheep Shed to make a giganto blanket. How do we prepare the roving to begin knitting?
Hi Ainsley and Theresa — all the wool preparation instructions are included in the pattern. You can find it here: Giganto-Blanket Pattern
Hi there i LOVE this idea of a blanket for a Christmas gift.
I was wondering if you could tell me where you got the wool from.
Thanks so much!
I get my wool from Sheep Shed Studio most of time. More info can be found on my FAQ: http://nocturnalknits.com/giganto-blanket-faq/
Hi there! Love the look of this blanket. It’s amazing!
I am hoping that cotton yarn could be used instead of wool. Is this possible? If so, can you tell me what you think will work? Type of yarn, do the needles need to be a different size?
I have yet to find a cotton yarn that works for this blanket, unfortunately! If you can find a source please let me know!
My family is allergic to wool. Is there any where that I can get cotton , cotton blend, or polyester to do the Giganto-Blanket. Thank you.
I have yet to find a cotton or polyester yarn that works for this blanket, unfortunately! If you can find a source please let me know!
How much yarn to make blanket for a twin sized bed blanket would I need?
In my experience, you get about 600 square inches per pound of wool.
Where do you buy the needles to make it
I bought PVC pipe at home depot! More info can be found on my FAQ: http://nocturnalknits.com/giganto-blanket-faq/
I finished the GigantoBlanket! It doesn’t look as big as yours or as nice but that is because I had to restart it a few times so the wool got “pilly”. I wrote a Blog post about it and maybe some people will find what I did helpful! Thanks so much Laura-it was hard work but well worth it! https://stacymorin.wordpress.com/
It will grow with time! Knits are very stretchy — give it a chance to rest and I bet it’ll get bigger.
Can I use mohair roving.I have tons of roving but not felted. I also thought of getting some sz 50 needles and stitching them together for length, would that work??
I’ve never worked with mohair so unfortunately I can’t help you with this! But I would just try a test and see how it behaves!
Do you get tired of people asking where they can get the wool?
Instead of using wool, I changed the yarn to super thick fleece. The 1 1/2″ wide PBC pipe sounds perfect but what length did you use
Each “needle” is 5 feet long.
Hi, Laura,
I bought your pattern and found a source for cheaper wool from China. Awesome so far. However, I didn’t know to look for anything other than the basic wool when I purchased my supplies. Now I don’t know if I have SuperWash wool or standard roving. How can I tell?
Thanks for your help and thanks for the seriously great and detailed instructions. The photos make all the difference!
Cheers!
Cindi
I would err on the side of assuming it’s NOT superwash. I’d recommend trying the steaming method, and using a small portion and checking to make sure it doesn’t ruin the wool before doing the whole lot. I hope that helps!
Hi Laura,
Silly question. The yarn I can get is coming in the form of several 1 kg balls. Is that ok or a single “yarn wire” should be used?
How one is supposed to put the pieces together if no knot should be done? Is it explained in the instructions?
Thanks,
P.
Not a silly question at all! This is explained in the pattern, and there’s also some more information on the FAQ: http://nocturnalknits.com/giganto-blanket-faq/
Basically, I recommend you use a needle felting tool to bind the ends together seamlessly. I also made a video about it (check out the FAQ page).
Hi, can you use a different cord. I am allergic to wool but would really like to make some of these.
You need a fiber that comes in long lengths of roving, and wool or alpaca or other animal fibers are the only things I can think of. You could try a nylon, but you’ll have to do some testing to see if it behaves properly!
