Cabled Giganto-Blanket
A couple of people have asked for the pattern I used in making my mom’s Christmas present, which was a smaller, cabled version of the giganto-blanket. I failed to get measurements or a decent picture of the blanket, but here are a few for reference:
I made this blanket out of the leftover wool I had from previous projects, and it used up about 5 pounds worth of wool. The finished blanket was more of a throw or lap blanket, rather than a full comforter.
If you want to make one for yourself, follow all the steps as listed in my tutorial (buy here on Ravelry or on Etsy). When it’s time to knit, cast on 20 stitches and follow the chart below:
Repeat the first four rows until you reach a desired length or run out of wool. That’s about it!

I’m not an expert cabler by any means but are these instructions correct?
You say
P on wrong side, K on right side… and
K on right side, P on wrong side.
Aren’t theses two lines the same thing? Shouldn’t the first line be: P on right side, K on wrong side?
Also can I ask whet you used as a cable pin?
Thanks
You are totally right! Thanks for catching that – I’ve fixed it now.
And I just used my arm as a “cable needle” for this. I suppose you could use a dowel or something? Just whatever gets the stitches out of the way temporarily.
Hi,
Im trying to understand what do u mean by K and P. Actually I dont speak english very well and I suspect thats why Im having a hard time understanding it,hahahah.
Can u please be more specific?
I loved ur blanket!
Hi! K = knit stitch and P = purl stitch!
What did you use as a cable needle?
Yama, I just used my arm, or rearranged the stitches in the right order if it was a small enough twist.
Laura,
I would like to make a comforter for a queen size bed. How many pounds of fiber will I need? Thanks.
In my experience, you get about 600 square inches per pound of wool. Sizing would depend on how much overhang you’d want for the bed. Hope that helps you calculate your sizing needs!
How can i crochet this blanket?
I’m not very good at crochet, so I’m not sure you could get the same cabled look using the crochet technique. But if you want to create your own stitch, you could easily crochet with the giant yarn by just using your arm as a “hook”. Hope that helps!
My sister has ALS and l wanted one for her she posted it. What would you charge for a throw size?
Hi Ronda, You can check out my Etsy shop for all my current items on sale. Thanks! https://www.etsy.com/shop/iwriteplays
you wouldn’t happen to have something similar in crochet or using arms?
I unfortunately don’t know crochet well enough to answer this! I did a quick search and found a tutorial on Craftsy on how to crochet cables, so maybe that will help?
Where do you find this size of yarn?
I use wool roving and do some work to prepare it so it doesn’t shed so much. There’s a ton more info on my FAQ page as well as in my pattern.
Hi Laura. I have watched your videos, and I wonder what that thing is that you use to connect a new ball of yarn? And where can I get it, please?
Hi Kirsten — it’s a needle felting mat and needle-felting tool. There’s more info on my FAQ Page as well!
I want yo learn how to do this!!!
Check out the FAQ page for all the info you’ll need!
Where can I find everything I need to make this item?? Thank you
Hi Darlene — you can find all the information in my pattern, and there’s a ton more info on my FAQ page! http://nocturnalknits.com/giganto-blanket-faq/
I don’t know the first thing about knitting. Would this be a good beginners project?
Hi Dana — the cabled version probably isn’t the best place to start, but if you’d like to make the simple original version, or just do a plain stockinette stitch, it’s very easy! I just recommend practicing with “normal” needles and getting comfortable with the mechanics of knitting before attempting it with the giant needles. I hope that helps! http://nocturnalknits.com/giganto-blanket-faq/
How long are the pc tubing?
They’re each 5 feet long.
